What to pack for a cruise

Packing for a cruise differs from a hotel stay: you need outfits for port, for dinner and for sea days. Here is the complete list.

The basic rule: less than you think

Cruise cabins are smaller than a hotel room and storage is limited. Most passengers bring too much and use half of it.

Ships have self-service laundries or a laundry service. For a seven-night cruise, five daytime outfits are enough.

For ports

Comfortable shoes are essential: in old European ports you walk a lot on uneven stone. Add sandals and one pair of closed shoes.

A thin waterproof layer is essential in Northern Europe and useful anywhere. Wind on deck makes a difference even at 25 degrees.

A small bag with a zip for ports. Do not take a large backpack into town — it marks you as a tourist.

For the evening

Most ships have one or two formal nights. A suit or a simple dress is enough. The other evenings are smart casual: shirts, relaxed dresses, long trousers.

Check the cruise line dress code before departure. Some ships prohibit shorts in the main restaurant, even at lunch.

Documents and money

A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. Even on European cruises, some ports require a passport rather than an ID card.

A digital copy of your passport, insurance and booking confirmation, saved offline on your phone.

A credit card for onboard spending — most ships are cashless. A little local currency for small ports.

What NOT to put in hand luggage

Liquids over 100 ml, sharp objects, extension leads with insufficient protection. Check the line's list: some also prohibit travel irons or electric cookers.

Medication belongs in hand luggage, with the prescription to hand if it is prescribed.

Documents: passport, visas if required, insurance, booking confirmation, digital copies.

Clothing: 5 daytime outfits, 1–2 evening outfits, swimwear, waterproof layer, comfortable shoes, hat.
